Exercise and Holistic Health

In naturopathic medicine, the body is looked at holistically. Someone is looked at as a whole person instead of just symptoms or a disease. This means several things. First, the body is looked at as a whole and in terms of the complex interactions of every body system. This can mean looking at the elimination organs along with the brain for example if someone is suffering from a mental condition. Also, this means the connection of the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional. Naturopathic medicine understands that imbalances in the body can come from emotional stress, environmental toxins, and nutritional deficiencies. These all need to be addressed in holistic medicine to achieve optimal health.

A healthy and fit body promotes a healthy and fit mind. Scientifically, exercise promotes more oxygen to travel to the brain. This allows for more focus, mental clarity, and mood regulation. It helps blood production and blood transport throughout the body. This transport moves nutrients through the body. Exercise produces endorphins, which promotes positive emotions and emotional stability. Also, exercise supports the detoxification pathways of the body, which supports energy and getting rid of disruptors. These disruptors can create mental and physical diseases. Exercising also supports a healthy sleep cycle. Sleep in turn supports healthy neurotransmitter levels, detoxification, and repair of the body systems. For kids, sleep is critical for growth and development. It is important that kids move everyday as well whether that is walking, playing outside, biking, running, or being involved in sports teams.

As a highly complex functional organ the brain plays an essential role in movement and sensory control as well as information processing. The brain is comprised of an intricate network of nerve cells with over 100 billion neurons communicating and interconnecting trillions of synapses. The brain network stretches out to every corner and layer of the human body. A functional and well-balanced brain is vital for overall well-being.

With nutrient, toxin, and energetic imbalances, it is not uncommon that people notice deficits in neurological and/or cognitive function. It is the result of our cumulative lifestyle choices. Choice of diet, level of physical activity and our ability to process stress all contribute to maintain functionality of the human body. One of the most important links to healthy neurological and cognitive function is effective circulation. Healthy circulation is vital to maintain and sustain a healthy and balanced neurological system.

Another aspect of a healthy and fit body and mind is exercise as a form of meditation and mindset. Clinical research shows that both meditation and physical exercise support dopamine and serotonin levels. Through running, I personally find an opportunity to process my thoughts and be present in the moment. It is a great way to build self-confidence through the accomplishment of creating a practice that you follow through on. In some exercise forms, there are sporting events that can further than sense of accomplishment. Many people also find a community through exercise, which supports a positive mindset and fulfillment.

From an energy medicine perspective, exercise moves stagnant low vibrational energy and promotes the opportunity to clear it and have higher vibrational energy in our field. Traditional Chinese Medicine calls this chi and looks at the body as chakras. This supports many of the lower chakras in relation to self and grounding to the Earth. Getting outside also helps reset our body’s accumulation of positive ions. Naturally, our body should have a charge of zero. The Earth has a mild negative charge. So, we can reset from being inside and around so many electronics (EMFs).
